Heavy rains and high winds lash the West Coast while snow and cold snap grip the East. In Los Angeles flooding leaves hundreds homeless as western storms flood lowlands and shut schools amid mudslides and rockfalls.
Francis Gary Powers was released by the Russians on Glienicker Bridge in Berlin in a swap for spy master Rudolf Abel. Powers flew to the United States after the exchange with Abel while Pryor, an American student, was also released. The deal followed months of secret talks and was described as separate from broader Cold War politics by State Department officials.
