Fires Devastate Tasmania In Deadly Brushfire Wave

Hobart residents describe a scorched island as fires swept from the hills toward the capital. At least 55 people are dead and thousands of homes destroyed amid 102 degree heat and 70 mile an hour winds. Survivors recount scenes of tragedy, rescued children, and animals burned in the blaze.

City Police Sergeants Begin New Assignments

Five city police sergeants will be transferred on February 12. Sgt Leonard W. Dietsch moves from internal affairs to detectives, Sgt Ralph O Neill arrives from the uniform division to take his spot. Sgt Ray Daly moves to detectives and Sgts Louis Schuler and Frank L Greene shift from detectives to uniform.

Silver Bell to Get First Telephone Service

The mining town of Silver Bell, with fewer than 1000 residents, is set to receive telephone service this fall after the Arizona Corporation Commission approved a one year lease for a facility site. Mountain States Telephone Co. and American Smelting and Refining Co. arranged the lease following a petition by about 200 residents seeking installation.
