A 7 year old Tucson boy Arturo Delahanty was struck by a car at the corner of S 12th Ave and Valencia Rd and died at Pima County Hospital. Corpus Christi man also killed in a separate accident about 17 miles north of Tucson this morning.
Gloria Coonts 26 of 2902 S Cottonwood Lane was critically burned when she cleaned her husband's trousers with gasoline in a bathtub can. Fire damaged the bathroom window, clothes burned off, and damage estimated at 400 dollars.
Oswaldo Munoz 22, a Corpus Christi rider, died when a northbound car he rode in left the road near the Arizona Portland Cement plant and rolled over. Antonio Solis 27, also from Corpus Christi, survived with a fractured left leg. Investigators say Munoz woke, grabbed the wheel, and the driver may be cited later. The crash occurred about 6:15 a.m. just south of the plant, bringing the year’s highway deaths to eight, matching 1959 on this date.
The Arizona Supreme Court reviewed the appeal of Tucson truck dealer Gene Bogard after oral arguments on three bribery counts tied to leased vehicles involving Pima County Supervisor chairman Lambert Kautenburger. The court will study briefs and may take about 30 days to issue an opinion.
Death row author Daryl Chessman faces a Monday ruling by Chief Judge Richard H. Chambers on whether he will get a full-scale hearing. The Ninth Circuit will decide if a stay of execution is needed and whether the Feb. 19 gas chamber date remains. Chessman has spent decades on death row after 1948 kidnapping and rape convictions in Los Angeles.
Federal Judge Louis E. Goodman urged commutation for Daryl Chessman, calling for life in prison without possibility of parole. Governor Brown noted the judge would act on clemency if he were governor, while Chessman awaits a Ninth Circuit appeal and faces a February 19 execution date.

Seven miners were trapped in a coal mine at Yamada City Fukui Japan by flood waters. They were 2300 feet from the entrance when the flood cut access. Shigeo Araki age 31 escaped and said water had been in the mine for days. dynamite charge suspected to have caused the flooding.
Sen. Symington of Missouri will speak in Phoenix on April 30 and Tucson on May 1, per Arizona Democratic chairman Joe Walton. The Phoenix appearance is the third Democratic fundraising forum featuring party leaders. The Tucson event is sponsored by the Sunday evening forum as Walton and other Democrats attend the western states conference.

Washington United Press International reports the Eisenhower administration plans to ask Congress to raise the federal minimum wage from $1.00 an hour by about 10 to 15 cents. Labor Secretary James P. Mitchell will likely propose a floor of $1.10 or $1.15, while AFL-CIO pushes to reach $1.25 and extend coverage to 7.5 million more workers. Mitchell may also back extending coverage to 2.5 million more workers. The administration’s stance to be revealed when Mitchell testifies before the House Labor Committee.
Negotiators for the International Union of Mine Mill and Smelter Workers and Phelps Dodge Corp. reached a contract ending a 170 day strike. The pact, ratified at Douglas Bisbee and Morenci operations, runs to July 1 1962 with 9.6 cent hourly raises and a 33.2 cent base pay rise plus fringe benefits. About 4 000 workers were idle and El Paso talks hinged on Arizona outcome. Federal mediator William P Halloran attended.
The Redshore batteries fired 165 shells at Kaoteng in the Matsu complex, hitting off shore islands held by Nationalists. The bombardment lasted about 40 minutes and was the first such assault since last September. It was reported by the Nationalist Chinese Defense Ministry.
In Havana security tightens around Soviet Deputy Premier Anastas Mikoyan after gunfire and anti Communist demonstrations threaten the opening of the Russian exposition. Police report no casualties and say about 20 students were arrested amid the protests near Marti Park and the Prado boulevard.
