Pinal deputies walkout over pay dispute disrupts county

Pinal County deputies began a second day of a walkout over demands for a 20 percent pay increase and better benefits, prompting county officials to consider arbitration or a court order to end the strike. Four-county border drug strike force may be ready in 60 days

Arizona State Atty Gen Bruce E Babbitt says a four-county border strike force fighting illegal narcotics from Mexico could be operational in 60 days. Termites Seen as Desert Asset by UA Researchers

University of Arizona entomologists William Nutting Michael Haverty and Jeffrey LaFage report termites in the desert ecosystem process and recycle wood yield fertilized soil, with colonies stabilizing desert soil and termites eating any available wood while birds like the cactus wren hunt them. They observed year round activity, peaking when soil is moist and around 72 degrees, noting termites challenge homeowners and that luring them with yard debris fails.
