The Navy announced ongoing sporadic air sea engagements in the Solomons during a week of fighting. It stated little beyond the continuing first described major Japanese effort to regain Guadalcanal. American ground forces reportedly captured Tassafaronga on Guadalcanal.
Allied air action targets Italy France and Germany with RAF daylight raids on Turin Lorient Spezia and Ruhr and a U S Flying Fortress daylight assault on north western Germany. British night raids hit Lorient Turin and other industrial targets while enemy fighters suffer incursions over the southeast coast.
Allied Headquarters reports Second Lt. Alfonso G. Seagraves of Tucson was awarded a gallantry medal for landing unarmed troop carrier planes under enemy air attack during the invasion of Nic a. The medal bearing a cluster was conferred yesterday by Maj. Gen. James Doolittle.
General Frank M. Andrews named commanding general of U S forces in the European theater and pledges intensified air offensives against Germany. Eisenhower remains in charge of North Africa as separate commands. Air raids in Tunisia claim 26 German planes downed and 26 damaged with 10 U S planes lost amid heavy fighting near Gabes and Sened.
Washington reports Axis war prisoners may be used next summer to boost food production for Allied forces. J A Walker of the Food Production Administration outlined plans to deploy prisoners in large groups for cultivating and harvesting crops, with recruitment targeting 50 000 low income families in Appalachia Minnesota and Wisconsin for placement on dairy livestock and poultry farms.
A bomber crashed a mile off the New Guinea coast. Pilot Lieut Willmor Pavlich and copilot Lieut Forest Mowry spent the day diving to recover valued equipment from the submerged craft. They retrieved a bomb sight, six guns, rifles, ammo, first aid kits, flares, a radio kit, and six parachutes. Local natives aided in transport to the crash site and back.
The House tentatively approved a gesture aimed at stopping government silver purchases, 166 to 103, as an amendment to the post office treasury appropriations bill. Rep. Celler framed it as a warning to limit silver use for war needs, while silver states argued subsidies are needed for producing other critical war materials.
Washington Feb 5 The War Labor Board awarded Shattuck Dean Mining Bisbee a $1 per day raise raising base pay to 7.26 for miners and 8.26 for shift miners retroactive to August 18. The decision aims to equalize pay with nearby Phelps Dodge and rejects major union demands while permitting future reopeners.
President Roosevelt sent a personal message to Premier Stalin praising the Soviet victory at Stalingrad. He called it a brilliant triumph that would spur renewed Allied resolve toward the final defeat and unconditional surrender of the common enemy. The message marks the second correspondence in two weeks.
Navajo hereditary chief Henry Chee Dodge urges moving Navajo administration from civilian bureaus to the Army. He praises Army officials for understanding Navajo problems and says past Army involvement shows better results. Dodge, 83, spoke at a civic club meeting after eight years of trouble with federal supervision.
Rubber Director William M. Jeffers asks state governors to cancel all horse race meetings at travel by car accessible tracks. A Stockholm report said Soviet forces under General Yeremenko captured Bataisk ten miles south of Rostov, threatening Rostov on the Salsk Rostov line. Moscow dispatches say the Caucasus front trap closed on German forces, with Staro Minskaya and Kanevskaya taken as Russians drive toward the Sea of Azov. The Red Army reports gains on the Ukraine Donets front and near Voronezh Kursk, as mobile units press to the coast and prisoners and armor are seized.
President Roosevelt asked Congress for an additional four billion dollars in cash and two hundred ten million in contract authority for the Navy to cover war needs and contingencies since the 1943 appropriations. They would fund miscellaneous expenses research laboratory naval petroleum reserves reserve maintenance ordnance and stores and personnel costs with specific items listed.
Allied air power intensifies against Germany and Axis targets. Churchill warned of a severe aerial ordeal, and now British bombers strike Hamburg while American Fortresses join daylight raids over northwest Germany. Night raids hit the Ruhr and Lorient. authorities say air power will hasten the war effort.
Rear Admiral Stirling writes that Navy communiques have withheld Solomons area results to avoid jeopardizing U S forces. He warns the public to prepare for possible negative news as American forces remain outnumbered by Japan in the Pacific.
In Phoenix on February 5 the Arizona Senate killed a bill requiring a three day wait for marriage licenses. The committee of the whole voted 12 to 5 to indefinitely postpone. Senator J Hubert Smith of Mohave County opposed the measure calling it garbage during wartime.
Reports from the Solomon Islands describe a large Japanese naval force moving toward Guadalcanal while U S Army troops push Japanese positions west of Bonegi river. Allied air attacks continue across New Britain and adjacent islands as secrecy persists and observers note possible UN offensive.
Philip A. Contzen Jr aged 35 and a Tucson native died suddenly at his home on South Fifth Avenue. A surveyor who worked with his father and for the geological survey he also appeared in local films and was a Tucson High School graduate. Surviving are his father a sister Mary and a brother Frederick a Fort Bliss captain. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Reilly undertakers.
Kemper Marley state highway commissioner testified he had not heard of the political fund until a 1941 letter from Gov Osborn. Earlier witnesses said the letter urged employee contributions to the fund and warned of legal violations. Marley is among 18 charged with Hatch Act violations. he learned of the kitty when J M Smith moved to abolish the fund.
