An Indonesian DC airliner with 26 aboard reportedly crashed into the Java Sea near Masalimbo Island 80 miles off the Borneo coast. El Meyer's watercolor Ahead of the Storm wins top prize at the Tubac Festival of Arts opening today through February 12. Frederick Black of the Tucson Art Center judged the entries. Other awards go to Geoffrey Jenkinson for Misty Morning and Sunrises, Louis Elmore Smith for The Indian, Tina Russell for woven fabric, Harwood Steiger for printed fabric, Opal Kilmer for Giraffe sculpture, Sollie Fields for Mana ceramic, and Lora Smith for Feeding Birds mosaic. Tomorrow is Meet the Artists day with prize recipients present plus cartooning demo by Frank Mannarino and music by Tony Garcia’s mariachis. Tubac Art Center hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. with no admission charge.
