A Northeast Airlines jet crashed moments after takeoff in a snow storm half a mile from the LaGuardia runways near Rikers Island. Pilot Capt. Albert H. DeWitt, 59, a veteran with 30 years at the airline and over 28,000 flight hours, is missing. See LIST Page 4.
Former TWA president and Helio promoter Jack Frye 54 died after a two car collision at S Palo Verde Blvd and E Ajo Rd. Driver Rosabell Wright 43 suffered minor injuries. Witness Howard Blackmore reported Wright ran a stop sign at high speed.
Despite the death of Helio president Jack Frye, officials say the company will proceed with moving to Tucson. Helio remains committed as local leaders including Bob Schmidt and Edward Earl pledge to carry on Frye’s long term commitments and the city of Tucson has provided a 365000 loan to aid the relocation from Kansas. Frye had discussed long term commitments and his death triggers pending legal issues surrounding the Helio board appointment.
Mrs Wright allegedly failed to control speed at a stop sign intersection causing a collision with Frye’s car. Frye died after veering off Palo Verde, while Mrs Wright faced a citation for loss of vehicle control as visibility was noted poor. Funeral services for Frye set for 11 a.m. Saturday.
President Eisenhower urged Congress to include higher taxes in every spending bill to balance his $77 billion budget. He criticized a $3 billion housing measure and Democratic airport spending proposals, saying the housing bill and airport aid exceed his budget requests by substantial margins.
A Democratic bill calls for 565 million dollars in federal grants for airport construction over five years, far exceeding President Eisenhower's request for 200 million over four years. The measure advanced after a committee rejected alternatives and moved ahead.
Tucson Chamber of Commerce voiced support for annexation as a path to growth. Mayor Don Hummel warned three North Side areas seeking incorporation could hinder development and tax clarity. A citizens committee led by Gibson Zeidler was formed to study annexation and action.

The House interior committee approves a bill to admit Hawaii as the 50th state by a 25-4 vote. Rep. Leo W. O Brienne, acting chair, says congressional sentiment is overwhelming for Hawaii's admission this year. The bill moves to the House Rules Committee after a one week delay for filing reports.
The Episcopal Church of Arizona will become an official diocese at an 8 p.m. service in Grace Church Tucson. Presiding Bishop Arthur Lichtenberger arrives from New York to induct Bishop Arthur Kinsolving I of Phoenix, who has led the district since 1945, as the first bishop of the new diocese.
The Soviet Union freed a U S truck convoy held in East Germany for two days after Washington delivered a sharp note. Findley Burns, adviser to the U S mission, had rushed to Berlin for talks with the Soviet political adviser. The move marked a U S victory amid Eisenhower protests that the convoy’s halt violated Germany related accords.
