Three GE engineers with 47 years in nuclear reactor work resign citing risks of nuclear power. They intend to campaign for California Nuclear Safeguards Initiative, seeking liability proof and waste storage assurances before new plants or continued operation. They will volunteer through June while living on savings.
UPI reports that U.S. aerospace firms and administration officials press to blunt or remove a fee disclosure mandate in the $3.049 billion foreign military sales bill. A committee led by Clark MacGregor is lobbying Congress to weaken the requirement, despite Senate Foreign Relations Committee approval.
Frances Jackson fired a small caliber pistol at her husband Melvin on the 10th tee of the North Course after an argument. The bullet struck him in a finger and wounded golf partner Eugene Arrington. both men treated for minor injuries. Jackson was arrested on assault with a deadly weapon charge but he did not want to press charges.
Elliot Richardson, first to hold four cabinet roles, took the oath as commerce secretary. He hints he will not pursue higher office this year and notes past service as attorney general and defense secretary. He spoke beside President Ford, saying he could serve until January 20, 1981.
A Louis Harris poll of 1,710 Republicans and independents taken Jan 5–14 shows Reagan closing Ford’s edge. Ford leads in the East with about 46 percent, while Reagan tops Ford 50 to 44 percent in the South ahead of Florida primary.
