Snow and ice blanketed Summerhaven atop Mount Lemmon with another inch after 3 p.m. and temperatures near zero. Inn manager Tony Zimmerman reports 6 to 8 inches off the summit and 10 to 12 inches at the ski run as conditions promise excellent skiing this weekend. Icicles were photographed at 180 N Church Ave.
A severe cold wave grips Europe from Turkey to Britain with nearly 100 deaths and millions in damage. Subzero gales threaten ships, floods affect Greece, and France Britain and Hungary log record lows and halted transport as Danube freezes and rivers lock in ice.

A South Tucson kerosene heater fire killed Leonard and Evelyn Giles ages 1 and 2 as the home burned. Their mother Helen Giles 22 rushed back to rescue them but was blocked by flames and later taken to County Hospital in shock. Firefighters failed to save the house and retrieved the bed mattress with the bodies. coroner's office arranged for mortuary transfer.
