In Sunnyslope Phoenix two 17 year olds died and two more youths were injured in a late night drag race that began as a dare. Patrick Charles Melton 17 died when his 1947 sedan struck a tree on North Central Avenue. Floyd Leroy Tibbitts 16 also died. Ralph Stanley Williams 17 and Jack Wilson 12 survived with critical injuries. Eugene Sanders 17 drove away after seeing the crash and later explained he left two girls in his car. Investigators traced the sequence from the drive in restaurant meeting point to the fatal skid and tree impact.

Ray Superior Road Erupts Near Highway 117
A 30 foot stretch of the Ray Superior road buckled rising seven feet and cracking into hundreds of pieces eight miles south of here. State workers rushed to the site to divert traffic as the upheaval subsided. A 15 foot wide crack appeared 50 feet above the gravel highway.
