Japanese bombers pounded Singapore as British defenses held along Johore Strait. Fire and police battled fires while civilians and officers aided efforts. RAF reconnaissance noted substantial enemy movement as the invasion nears.
R.A.F. air strikes stem Japanese attempts to cross the Salween river and land along the Martaban Gulf as British forces hold positions near Moulmein. Reports say Tokyo reinforcements move from Thailand while Burma defense units rally on a widening front. In a separate Arizona note Teodoro Valles admits slaying his wife Ramona Valles during a family dispute at Tucson.
Washington February 3. Representative Carl Anderson Republican Minnesota introduced HR 6512 to provide five thousand dollars national service life insurance for all military and naval personnel with government paying premiums. Representative OConnor Democrat Montana filed HR 6515 to suspend annual assessment work in mining claims located until July 1 1942.
Canberra reports Army Minister Francis M. Forde telling overseas Australian forces a major Allied movement is underway. He praised hold firm at Singapore and noted each hour of Japanese resistance aids reinforcements and weapon buildup. Prime Minister Curtin outlined a confident war plan to state premiers, noting distance and time limit rapid action.
Washington reports Leon Henderson and Secretary Wickard announced complete agreement on stabilizing the cost of living through farm price controls. Government stock use and price limits aim to encourage production while a parity level guides price ceilings, with objections from some farm states.
A. W. Coon, a Heaven Realty Co. salesman, is found dead in his car on Swan road near East 22nd street. Coroner Co. W. Gardner rules suicide with a shotgun, saying no inquest. Survives wife Wilma F. and two children Shirley 12 and Donna Jean 8. private funeral planned.
Admiral Chester W. Nimitz said all ships planes and manpower are in action across the Pacific to pressure Japan. He cited bold raids on the Marshall and Gilbert islands and emphasized ongoing effort and dedication to protect the United States.
Moscow reports say German reinforcements to the southern front face stronger Red Army forces. Soviet dispatches cite 17 Nazi planes destroyed in a week and deepening bomber offensives, with 1,400 Germans killed in three sectors and German counterattacks repelled as Smolensk remains a focal point.
United Press reports that despite heavy Allied bombing and Dutch resistance, Japan is tightening its grip on the Netherlands Indies with the Java offensive near. Macassar delays persist but air power of the Allies could halt the push as U S planes seek reinforcements.
Chinese army spokesman reports a large Japanese force sighted near Amoy in the Formosa Strait. The fleet allegedly includes 41 warships and 69 ships total with transports, a hospital ship, and launches, part of Tokyo’s effort to offset losses in the southwest Pacific.
The House Foreign Affairs Committee unanimously approved a $500 million war loan to China. Four cabinet officers, testifying behind closed doors, urged rapid aid to support China in its war effort. Speaker Rayburn had forecast swift action.
Melbourne reports Australia halting empire air mail to British points as Japanese threat grows. A test blackout along 127 miles of the Sydney coast prompted a dramatic alert. Mail to Britain will go by steamship to the United States then by air to Britain. A single Japanese plane attacked Port Moresby, damaging nothing. Prime Minister Curtin defended defense talks and sent Admiral McNeil on a mission.
U P dispatch reports American battle planes sunk two, possibly three Japanese transports in the Macassar Straits as heavy air raids battered Soerabaya and eastern Java. Dutch guerrillas claim local successes in Celebes Minahassa area amid ongoing invasion pressure.
The War Department reports two Japanese landing attempts on the Bat an peninsula were repulsed with heavy losses. American air and naval actions prevented barges from reaching shore and Filipino forces fired on the beach. General Clinton A. Pierce was slightly wounded in the fighting as MacArthur’s troops counterattacked and seized enemy equipment.
The Senate approved a bill creating a 1 billion dollar fund to insure private property against bombing and enemy attacks. It also raised the Reconstruction Finance Corporation lending authority by 2.5 billion dollars and allows condemnation of land for the war effort by RFC and defense subsidiaries. The measure moves to the House for consideration.
In El Centro California February 3 UP carrot growers of the Arizona Imperial valley say a dispute over Dr Margaret Smith diet report on carrots has ended amicably. S V Christierson of the Western Growers Protective Association urged a retraction of Smiths claim that Arizona carrots are the best and contain extra carotene for RAF night fighters.
Phoenix readers learn that Arizona’s state corporation commission approved a 10 percent increase in passenger fares for intrastate trains. The federal interstate rise takes effect February 10, with intrastate hikes to follow after at least two days notice. The raise was requested by Apache Railway Santa Fe Ray and Gila Valley Railroad Southern Pacific and Pacific Motor Trucking and Santa Fe Transportation.
