A Norwegian patrol vessel intercepted a Soviet fishing ship in Norwegian waters marking the fourth straight day of incursions. Since Monday, 15 Russian vessels have been seized, many at gunpoint, by the Norwegian Navy in a growing dispute at sea.
The Soviet fishing fleet reportedly entered Norwegian territorial waters under cover of night near the out set of the Russian invasion. One poacher was captured by the Norwegian auxiliary Sarpen before dawn, while the rest retreated to high seas. Norway rejected Moscow demands for release.
British Prime Minister Eden told the Senate that atomic weapons create mutual deterrence among the United States Britain and the Soviet Union as fear and uncertainty stalk the world He outlined a three part plan to implement the Washington declaration focusing on alliances shared purpose economic aid and warning against offering easy concessions he warned the nuclear age demands vigilance and unity between West powers
Captain Arthur C. Grande and civil deputy Joe Berume were fired by Sheriff Ben J. McKinney after he demanded resignations from staff seeking public office. Grande planned to run for sheriff and Berume for constable in Precinct.
The 1956 Pima County toll rose to four with Arthur Leon, 28, dying at Tucson Medical Center after being struck by a car on Wilmot Road near East 6th Street. Driver Conrad Brasher, 32, a University student, remained at the scene as investigators searched for a passing motorist who assisted Leon. Coroner's inquiry pending further investigations.
A northwest wind brought the season’s coldest spell to Tucson. Temperatures fell from 2:30 pm yesterday, dipping to 27–28 at dawn at the Weather Bureau station. Forecasters warn of a hard freeze and urge plant protection after a storm-laden night.
Old Pueblo Transit Co asks the state corporation for a general fare raise matching Tucson Rapid Transit. The plan splits the first zone into two and adds a perimeter zone with new fares of 10 15 and 20 cents, plus a nickel for every 2.5 miles beyond the third zone.
A blizzard left 34 people stranded overnight at Hawthorne Elementary in northeast Albuquerque. Crews dug eight to ten foot drifts around the school as Army trucks delivered 50 blankets. No injuries reported. students and staff rode out the storm with classes continuing despite isolation.
The National Safety Council reports 92 000 Americans killed in 1955 from accidents led by motor vehicle deaths. Mishaps injured 9.2 million with an economic loss around 10.3 billion dollars. highway deaths rose eight percent and December totals peaked at 3 960, the highest since 1941.
The State Senate approved a bill allocating 176 267 dollars to the welfare department to aid needy persons. It also passed four measures in committee of the whole, including plans for a multi million dollar Capitol improvement and 4 050 000 dollars for the project. Other actions set 20 000 dollars for a land survey by the Colorado River and 25 000 dollars for a runoff water study on state lands. The Senate adjourned until 10 a.m. Monday.
Assistant district attorney Edward M. Sullivan told Suffolk County Superior Court that some of the 1,219,000 Brinks loot has been recovered. He declined to specify how much is in official custody or remaining missing after the January 17, 1950, robbery.
