New York December 31 expert outlook for 1949 foresees a buyer’s market into the year with fewer shortages and generally high incomes. Prices may ease as production slows, labor costs stay high, and some firms shut down, causing dislocations but no mass lay-offs expected.
Tokyo report notes General MacArthur grants Japan permission to fly the rising sun flag publicly for the first time since surrender. In a New Year message he links nationalism to universal laws and urges voter turnout on January 23 to safeguard economic recovery and political freedom amid mixed public reaction.
Ten persons were injured in three automobile accidents Thursday night and Friday as 1948 ended with record Arizona highway fatalities. A Friday morning head on collision near Red Rock 32 miles north of Tucson injured Mabel V. Hamilton Santa Ana Calif. Louisiana Hamilton 16. Eugene Hamilton 3. Lola A Townsend Santa Ana 350. Clarence Townsend 20. Vaughn C. Honeycutt 50 Winterhaven Calif. all taken to Pima County Hospital with noncritical injuries. Deputy reports indicate Honeycutt driving a 1948 Frazer lost control after being forced off by a passing car, crashing into a 1934 Hupmobile driven by Townsend. The crash produced visible injuries and prompted urgent Red Cross blood donations. A second accident on Mission road Thursday night hospitalized Billy Lee Alred 301 Indian School Road and minor injuries.
The 80th Congress ended its session with adjournment at 11 28 am Tucson time on Saturday. Leaders were chosen for the new Democrat controlled House and Senate as Democrats plan to take over. McKeown won the post of president pro tempore over Tydings. Barkley remains Democratic leader until January, with Lucas to succeed him. See CONGRESS on Page 9.
In Rome on Friday two tremors were felt by a few residents with no damage. The Rome Institute of Geophysics recorded the quakes, one in the early hours and a second later.
Air craft hunting for a missing DC-3 charter airliner carrying 82 aboard concentrated on the Bahamas island chain Friday after flares were seen near Andros. Seven air force planes were diverted to the area hoping to locate wreckage or survivors. No evidence found. An unconfirmed Cuba coast sighting was ruled out after a low flyover. The plane, returning to Miami from San Juan, carried 29 Puerto Ricans, two infants, and a crew of three.
Maricopa county board of supervisors awarded a 39422 dollar contract to H R Meadows Construction Co for a new home economics administration building at Osborne school in Phoenix.
J. F. McKale of the University of Arizona received honorable mention in the Burlington Liars Club contest at Burlington Wisconsin. L. W. Tupper of Patricia Alberta won the championship with a wind tale involving 2,000 post holes and a northwester, the first time a non U.S. entry topped the event since 1929.
State Auditor Ann Frohmiller began preparing January public assistance checks after belated receipt of 400000 in federal funds. Welfare officials and Sen. Hayden pressed for expedited mailing as funds arrived in one lump sum, with separate checks normally issued for different aid classifications.
Arizona on Parade will feature 80 high school bands and floats under a 10 officer police motorcycle escort. The march through Phoenix leads to the Salad Bowl game between the University of Arizona and Drake University, with the Arizona Bushmasters guiding the procession and 2,000 bandsmen performing before the national anthem.
President Truman planned a Sunday strategy session with top aides to map a new deal program for the 81st Congress. The talks would cover foreign policy, domestic matters, and the state of the union theme to be delivered next week. Barkley, Rayburn, Lucas, and McCormack were invited to join at the White House.
Federal Judge W Calvin Chesnut refused to order discontinuance of libel depositions by Whittaker Chambers ahead of Alger Hiss perjury trial. Justice Department objected to further depositions, noting Chambers cited documents allegedly stolen from confidential State Department files. Chambers later produced copies from a pumpkin jug on his Westminster Maryland farm.
Tucson post office receipts for 1948 are expected to top the million dollar mark for the first time. Mayor N. T. Houston and Postmaster Harold B. Collins note all‑time high population and growth indicators. New development chief William B. Pyle aims to boost payroll and promote Tucson as a tourist center amid expanding water and sewer plans.
Nanking December 31 Chiang Kai-shek announced in a New Year message he would resign after 21 years as China’s leader to open peace talks with the Communists. An executive committee meeting was planned to approve the action. The message outlines a shift to peace as government policy and explains past anti Communist campaigns while noting adjustments to the NanKing Shanghai stance. Chiang met leaders to review his decision amid long career since Sun Yat-sen’s era with the Nationalist state guiding China’s modernization and war against warlords and invaders.
Late December rains drenched the coastal north Atlantic states flooding New England and New Jersey damaged farms and property. One death reported as families evacuated in Massachusetts and New Jersey. Highways blocked and rivers overflowed. National Guard deployed in Western Massachusetts near the Hoosac river to assist evacuations as more rain expected.
Lewis W. Douglas U S ambassador to the Court of St James said in Tucson that western Europe has improved immeasurably during the past year. He and his wife arrived on the Golden State and will visit the Douglas ranch near Sonosta as their daughter Sharman visits. He praised the Marshall plan in fighting communism and expects eventual success in European aid. Born in Bisbee, Douglas entered public life in Arizona then served in Congress and as budget director before leading Me GS university in Canada and Mutual Life Insurance Co. of New York.
Sen. Scott W. Lucas of Illinois is expected to be named senate majority leader when the new Congress convenes January 3. He will hold a press conference on the air from 7 to 7:30 p m Saturday. KCNA will carry the conference as part of its Met the Press network program.
