Antarctica holds key to measuring air pollution says geologist

Dr Laurence Gould of the University of Arizona told the Pima County Bar Association that Antarctica’s two traits help track pollution. Subzero conditions preserve residues from Earth’s atmosphere and the continent has no industrial pollutants of its own. He notes 133 million tons of garbage are emitted yearly and cites ice depths up to 16 500 feet with average layers around 7 000 feet. If all Antarctic ice melted, sea levels could rise about 200 feet.
