A major coastal wildfire in Malibu burned about 21000 acres into its second day with 30 homes lost and a 35 mile perimeter. Fire crews battled hot spots in Latigo Canyon as flames threatened high-value properties and looting reports emerged while aerial planes dumped treated water.
Arthur Grunewald of Tucson details being trapped by walls of flames near Malibu Beach as the blaze roared along U S Highway 101 with 80 to 100 mile gusts. The family escaped to Oxnard then Los Angeles and stayed at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel before planning to return to Tucson.
Tense calm marked three southern cities as gunfire and arrests followed bus desegregation actions. In Montgomery two buses were fired on with no injuries. Birmingham threatened white minutemen. Tallahassee saw nine drivers and a manager arrested for failing to enforce segregation rules.
Kautenburger claims the Pima County Board of Supervisors approved Plan B on December 18 and says the plan was delivered to the board today. Other officials dispute any approval or delivery and say Plan B was not presented or approved before today.
Tucson agreed to pay 725000 for Delray Water Systems to extend lower rates to about 2425 customers in the easterly annexed area. Mayor Don Hummel said the rate drop from 6 to roughly 3.70 per 20000 gallons will start around Jan 10. Delray is described as the largest private utility ever acquired by the city.
Tucson enjoyed clear skies with warm sunshine as a steady breeze added a wine-like spice to the air. Nighttime temperatures fell to near freezing, with predictions of another bright day reaching 60 to 70 degrees and humidity down to 8 percent aiding comfort.
Qualifying of two Superior Court jury panels began with about half the 150-member pools present. Sheriff’s office delayed mailings until yesterday after lists were supplied Dec 18. About 60 appeared in Division 2 under Judge Garret. 80 in Division 1 with Judge Johnson. Undersheriff Burr blamed mimeographed forms and mail timing. 300 more jurors to be vetted in Divisions 3 and 4 tomorrow.
The year end report declares European divisions now possess more killing power than any army. Replacing two infantry divisions in Germany, the 3rd Armored and 11th Airborne Divisions boosted firepower and mobility.
The U S Chamber of Commerce education committee will hold its semi annual meeting in Tucson January 11 and 12 drawing business leaders from 21 states and the District of Columbia. Sessions will be at the Tucson Chamber of Commerce and attendees will stay at the Sands Hotel. A key topic will be federal aid to education.
