Defendants include the City of Tucson, Schaffer, Kay Jr., Paul Miner, and the Civil Service Commission.
The Air Force grounded its 223 F111 swingwing jets after a Nevada training crash killed Lt. Col. Thomas J. Mack and Maj. James L. Anthony near Nellis Air Force Base. The incident marks the 15th F111 loss, with prior groundings tied to heat-duct leaks and hydraulic and wing issues.

A Coast Guard cutter towed a seven member missionary family and their sailboat 135 miles southeast of Cape May New Jersey after their vessel lost power in heavy seas. The Hardie family Warren Lee and five sons aged 4 to 18 were rescued and arrived at Cape May later. The voyage began in Norfolk Virginia en route to Israel with planned Gibraltar stop.
Ronald Joseph Browning, a Naylor Junior High School teacher, is charged with the November 12 armed robbery at Oxford Plaza Liquor Store. Two psychiatrists, Drs. Willard L. Shankel and John T. Clymer, were appointed by Superior Court Judge William C. Frey to determine his competence to aid in his own defense. The clerk was shot in the face and $300 was taken. Browning’s attorney, Benjamin Lazarow, had requested the mental examination.
Robert Scoggin, state grand dragon of the United Klans of America from Spartanburg South Carolina, was released early from a federal prison camp near Safford. He served 10 months of a one year term for failing to produce records for a congressional committee. He was released at 1 15 a m to catch a bus to Phoenix and then flew home.
