TWA Objects to Friday Merger Talk Between Airlines
A CAB examiner recommended approval of Pan American Airways purchase of American Airlines subsidiary American Overseas for 17.45 million dollars subject to protections for workers and transfer of Atlantic operating permits. The move would expand Pan American routes from New York to London Amsterdam Berlin and the Scandinavian capitals and include Moscow Leningrad and Warsaw permits. Trans World Airways opposes the sale arguing it would end competition in transatlantic routes. The examiner noted current seven year permits and potential mail savings of about 9 million dollars per year while total mail payments to the three lines run around 25 million dollars annually.
