In 1940 they handled 40 074 shipments and rejected 892 partly or wholly for diseases that could spread locally. Junk Dealer Can Fight City Hall in Lancaster
Junk dealer W. R. Fugitt is jailed after defying court orders to remove yard junk. Dist Judge James McCarthy fined him 1000 dollars and jailed him until purge by clearing the seven acre plot annexed by the city in 1955. Fugitt argues he operated the yard before annexation, while the city asserts he did not own the land then. Fugitt acted as his own lawyer.

Woman’s leg crushed as elevator carries her up twelve floors
Ida Herman, 66, was caught in an automatic elevator door at the Central Medical Building in Center City. As she entered with her husband Morris Herman, 72, the door closed trapping her leg and the car rose to the top floor. Firemen freed her. her condition was later reported satisfactory.
