Mayor William O'Dwyer of New York wed Elizabeth Sloan Simpson in a simple St. Joseph's church ceremony in Stuart Florida. The couple then sailed on the yacht Almar II for a honeymoon as a crowd watched a heart skywritten above.
Moscow receives a flood of gifts to mark Joseph Stalin turning 70. Reports say over a million parcels from satellite states and beyond fill the Kremlin, with crates of motorcycles airplanes and even whole factories among the items.
The Tucson City Council authorized issuing 1.25 million dollars in water revenue bonds to avert a summer water shortage. Bonds dated Mar 1 will bear up to 4 percent interest, run 30 years, and be repaid from anticipated water department revenue. Mayor Houston warned of rationing without new wells, five new wells to be drilled once funds arrive.
A London barmaid, Diane Fletcher, avoided a prison term after medical exams predicted multiples. Ordered placed on two years probation, she had faced a Bow Street sentence of one year for alleged tavern thefts before the appeals committee quashed it.

Vincent L. Fitzgerald was ousted as secretary of the Arizona racing commission effective January 1 with Thad Mullen named temporary secretary. W. N. Sangster is considered for permanent secretary if funds permit. The commission faces financial strain, seeks legislative help, and contemplates limiting racing days in Maricopa County to 30 for horses and 40 for dogs while supervising meets.
Phoenix December report on Ft. Grant boys' industrial school reveals a dispute between Supt. Jack Wilson and the State juvenile institutions board over the adequacy of educational offerings. The interim committee will reconvene December 27 at Ft. Grant to continue study and later review Griffenhagen associates' reorganization report in January in Phoenix.

The 1950 Arizona governor race opens with Thad M. Washington Dec 20 The government added witness Charles Ingersoll of Cleveland to a grand jury probe of John Maragon a former White House entrant charged with lying about payments for government business. Ingersoll listed as an employer on tax forms and may testify about fees. The case stems from the five per center inquiry into government contracts and payments.
