Escapees From Japanese Ship as Torpedo Sinks Vessel
Two American sailors Arthur Waters of Madera California and Charles Claybourn of Albuquerque New Mexico escaped from a Japanese prisoner ship after 28 months in captivity. They leaped into open water when torpedoes struck, were rescued by Filipinos and an American ship took them to Australia with 48 others. Both men, now at a U S Naval hospital, recount grim confinement and limited rations during transfer to Mindanao.
