The Air Force announced a successful limited range Atlas missile flight from Cape Canaveral at 12 38 p m EST landing in a preselected target area. The 100 ton rocket climbed through cloud cover and produced a long engine roar before vanishing from sight.
Maj. Gen. Thomas DeShazo, commander at Fort Sill, said the Army plans to test guided missiles by flying them between bases in the United States once accuracy and safety are proven. He noted Redstone missiles nearing this accuracy and stressed nonnuclear contents, automatic self destruction, and testing in nonmilitary areas for battlefield precision.
New York stocks fell as afternoon losses set in with steel, motors, oils and metals trading at new lows. A late rally failed to reverse the trend as factory layoffs and November industrial output declines underscored persistent gloom.
Two two year old boys celebrated the holidays by stealing a Christmas tree from El Grande Market at 69 N Grande Ave. Officials reported the theft, the youths were detained by police and later released to their parents.
Senator William A. Sullivan proposes three bills to liberalize Arizona welfare rules. They raise monthly maximum incomes for one to three plus members, allow automobile ownership for recipients, and permit 15 year residence for benefits, aligning with federal standards.
Arizona retail sales are projected to total about 15 billion dollars for the year, a state record and roughly one percent above last year. The forecast appears in Arizona Progress published by Valley National Bank, noting monthly retail totals surpassed 1 million dollars in several months.

He warned progress has been slow and pointed to California’s junior college model.
President Eisenhower arrived 42 minutes after NATO chiefs began meetings and said he would stay briefly as he prepared ideas for the session. He had earlier visited his old NATO command and appeared fully recovered from fatigue, greeting Italian Premier Zoli and West German Chancellor Adenauer before a scheduled dinner with French President Coty.
The forecast notes yesterday’s high at 71 and low 53 this morning. Tonight’s low is expected between 45 and 50 with Wednesday’s high around 65 to 70 degrees.
The eight day subway strike ended with motormen voting to return to work at 7:30. The TWU had won a bargaining election for city transit workers while the rival Michael J. Quill industrial union trailed with under a third of eligible votes. A key factor was a promised bill shifting union representation decisions from the Transit Authority to the State Labor Relations Board.
