Tightening Espionage Law Proposed By Atty. Gen.
Washington December 17 Atty. Gen. Clark said the administration will seek earlier in the next session amendments to present espionage statutes to tighten the law while preserving constitutional rights. He spoke after a cabinet meeting at the White House and noted the Justice Department has studied the matter for some time. The spy case involves a Norden bombsight secret allegedly found with a ballistics expert. Rail unions weigh board plan for 40 hour week
A presidential emergency board urged railroads to adopt a 40 hour workweek for 1,000,000 nonoperating workers starting Sept 1 1949 and to grant a 7 cent hourly wage rise retroactive to Oct 1 1948. The proposal would cost about 450 million dollars yearly and suspend time and a half Sunday pay. Leaders of 16 railroad unions meet in Chicago next week to decide acceptance.
