A regional forecast notes scattered snow showers and flurries across the Northeast with continued cold conditions. Snow and flurries are also expected in the Rocky Mountains while the Midwest warms slightly. Public weather data credited to Robert L. King of the U.S. Weather Bureau in Tucson.
A car wash at 4601 E Broadway suffered about $2000 in damage after two arson fires broke out just before 6 p.m. Fire Capt. Ellis Franklin reported both blazes were apparently set and spread through the Quick Service Car Wash.
Arctic air chilled much of the country with Florida hitting 34 degrees the coldest December reading since 1940 and Miami frost inland. The Northeast saw up to a foot of snow with New York City blanketed and Long Island buried as a 6 year old and a 4 year old drowned after slipping through ice in Syosset. Snow also spread to the Albany area with eight inches reported while Pacific storms brought rain and high winds from Washington to California.
A three car collision at W Ventura St and N Miracle Mile Strip left three men injured. William S Gasca, 20, of 120 W Blackridge Dr, remains in guarded condition at St Mary's Hospital. Paul Kenneth Lockett, 21, of 727 F Lesteryk, and Bobby Olivas, 35, of 1801 E Speedway, both in satisfactory condition. Olivas' car struck a parked unoccupied vehicle.
