A seven or eight year old South Side boy was arrested by Tucson police on suspicion of arson and extortion related to a fire at La Supreme Mexican Food Products on 42nd Street. Investigators say a note wrapped around a rock demanded 4000 dollars or the factory would be blown up. A note directing Garcia to leave 3000 dollars in a garbage can at a hidden address was found on his car windshield. He was turned over to the County Juvenile Court Center with intent to try him as an adult.
Alfred J. Barr, 79, longtime head of Phelps Dodge Ajo operations and UA alumnus, died at St Mary’s Hospital. He joined Phelps Dodge in 1922 after UA Mining Engineering studies and retired in 1960. Funeral arrangements are pending Arizona Mortuary. Survived by Ruth, a son Richard, a daughter Mrs. Robert Fitting, seven grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.
