A one day seminar at the Huntington Sheraton Hotel in Pasadena produced a stark warning from experts that alcoholism has reached epidemic proportions in Los Angeles County. Weldon Butterworth of the Alcoholism Council of Greater Los Angeles cited a $12 billion annual cost to industry and government and estimated about 450,000 alcoholics in the county. Dr. George D. Lundberg of USC Medical Center defined alcoholism by loss of freedom of choice and noted the peak among people in their 40s, with severe cases common from ages 11 to 30.
