Witnesses Summoned in Baker Probe Fronting Senate Hearing
The Senate Rules Committee, in closed session, summoned three witnesses to probe the affair of Robert G. Baker who resigned as secretary to the Democratic majority. Edward N. Bostick of Melpar Corp Arthur C. Weid and Stanley Lee of Capitol Vending were named as witnesses. The inquiry centers on a lawsuit by Capitol Vending president Ralph Hill alleging Baker received 5600 for securing a 300000 annual vending franchise at Melpar and later sought to switch the franchise to a rival firm. Baker's wealth was noted at over 1 million with a Senate salary near 20000.
