Whalen Found Not Guilty by Reason of insanity in shotgun murders
Superior Court Judge Lawrence Howard ruled Paul Whalen insane at the time of the June 14 1957 shotgun slayings of Freelin Huff and his wife near Marana. The dual trial under Arizona insanity statutes led to a not guilty by reason of insanity verdict after psychiatrists testified Whalen is schizophrenic and a danger to himself and others. Whalen has already spent 11 years in the state hospital since the killings.
