Calls to bar Soviet fishing extend 200 miles off US

About 30 representatives of Gloucester's fishing industry urged Congress to expand U S territorial waters to 200 miles to shield fishers from Soviet fleets. The Gloucester Fisheries Commission also backed enforcing international net size rules as critics say Russians with fine mesh nets take baby fish. Kennedy warned unauthorized intrusions of the three mile limit may recur and noted 169 Soviet ships off Cape Cod amid reports of nearly 300 vessels. Hearings are planned Sept 5 before the Senate Commerce Committee.
