In Berlin on Friday seven German policemen from the American sector were reported kidnapped by Russian officers and soldiers at gunpoint. Four remain missing, including District Police Chief August Hoppe, after a larger sweep that also rounded up 600 to 800 civilians in Soviet black market raids near the border. Three officers escaped back to the U.S. sector.
President Truman ordered selective service to mail classification questionnaires to single nonveteran registrants by Sept. 7 under the peacetime draft act. Deferments apply to dependents veterans needed in essential jobs and other classes. 19 through 25 year olds will be drafted in stages with oldest first.
Rep Nixon urged quick production of missing witness J Peters by the immigration service, saying he is under a $5 000 bond awaiting deportation. Immigration Commissioner Miller said he would discuss the matter with Nixon and others while Peters’ exact deportation status remains unclear. Republic Steel officials continued their bid to take over the government owned $28 million Kaiser-Frazer blast furnace in Cleveland. Edgar F. Kaiser said KF would keep its lease and move in September 1 after talks with Republic officials.
Two nine year old boys confessed to starting a basement paper fire that caused a downtown blaze in Reno. The fire killed five people and injured 137 as smoke and heat spread through a vacant building. Authorities said a gas buildup from burning materials triggered an explosion. Both boys are in juvenile court custody and temporarily housed in the county jail.
