Kilcullen Named Tank Adjutant

First Lt. William J. Kilcullen of 722 E. 138th St has been named adjutant of the 24th Tank Battalion, USA Reserve, announced by battalion commander Maj. Ettore DeConcini. A Hughes Aircraft medical engineer, Kilcullen is a Tucson native, veteran of the Korean War with the Seventh and 32nd Divisions, and recipient of the Combat Infantry Badge the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart.

Army Taking Men For Short Terms

The Army begins implementing reserve training with six month active duty then years in the ready reserve. Enlistments can be six years total, with two years active, three in ready reserve, and one in standby reserve. High schoolers may defer initial active duty until graduation or age 20. Enlistments to start likely Oct 1 with 90,000 quotas for Army and 5,500 for the Marine Corps.

Exemptions to Manufacturers Called Unfair

Leo J. Finch told the Tucson Retail Trade Bureau that tax exemptions for manufacturers cost Pima County about 60 000 yearly, reducing revenue. He noted last year $745 000 in exemptions on equipment and inventory and discussed shifting the inventory tax to the yearly average to reflect lower values. He cited veterans and widows exemptions costing Tucson city and school district revenues, with 9 000 ex servicemen and 3 000 widows affected.

Mrs Clark Dies In Crash Near Mesa

Mrs Erla Mae Clark 20 of Silver Bell was killed when her car crashed while the driver, her husband Donald Clark 24, fell asleep at the wheel on Highway 60-70 three miles east of here. The car rear collided with a parked tanker truck. The crash also injured the husband and twin babies. a year-old boy survived with minor injuries. Patrolman Harold Caywood reported the car veered off the road and struck the tanker.

Polio Will Subside Like Smallpox Says Price

Washington Assistant Surgeon General David Price told the Federation of Insurance Counsel that polio may subside like smallpox and diphtheria. He predicted the threat of paralytic polio will diminish to vanishing point in the future. Boyd Campbell, president of the Chamber of Commerce, attended the speech prepared for delivery.

Phoenix. Chairman James C. Wood of the Republican Central Committee urged Republicans to contact county state committee chairs or Republican headquarters about running for elective office. He said the party is not an exclusive club and many qualified Republicans are unfamiliar with candidate selection methods. The state HQ will welcome visits to discuss a possible 1956 ticket.

Burning Ship Rescue Off Iceland Aboard Argo Beam

A gale off Iceland forced the burning British collier Argo beam to send a distress call before dawn. The Swedish luxury liner Kungsholm 65 miles away rescued most of Argo beams 34 crew, leaving only skipper George Watson and a skeleton crew. The Argo beam’s engine room crew fought the fire while pencil makers estimate pencils still handle about 90 percent of U S writing jobs.
