A German rocket expert claims Russia is building a network of V-2 rocket bases aimed at western Europe. He recently visited Moscow's B-bomb institute and warns of strategic danger. The man requested anonymity after years of alleged Soviet service.
In two statements Arch bishop Josef Beran denounced Czechoslovak authorities for confining him in the Prague palace and violating constitutional rights after a two month silence. In Washington a farmers group urged President Truman to renegotiate the Mexican labor contract for harvest season led by Sen. Anderson of New Mexico who called the accord unworkable.
Tucson's chamber of commerce tax study committee opposed proposal B in the August 23 bond election for city waterworks. They favor A and C and plan a publicity push including ads and radio time to inform voters. An emergency board meeting was called and a $2,000 fund for the information campaign was proposed.
A county wide school health council was launched to coordinate health resources for school children in indigent families. The plan includes separate city county and parochial school health councils and a revolving health fund funded by civic groups volunteers loans repayment. Officers include Robert Morrow Tucson schools superintendent and E Jay Howenstine as coordinator.

She began a beef steak diet after a favorable weather brief from the air ministry meteorological office. Forecasts warned of potentially unfavorable conditions beginning around midnight, prompting urgent alert for the attempt.
The Federal Reserve Board forecast moderate rises in construction work soon, backing Tobin’s view that employment will grow by about 1,000,000 this year. Construction employed over 2,000,000 at mid year, helping cushion declines in factories and mines as the economy cooled in spring and early summer 1949.

Deputies Harry Bridges and Edgar D. Neal resigned from Sheriff Jerome P. Martin's office after learning undersheriff Maurice T. Guiney was dismissed. Bridges since 1947 and Neal, who served under Echols and continued under Martin, asked for Sept 1 effective dates. The move follows Deputy Ed Hendricks leaving last Friday.
A lone gunman wanted for an $800 El Paso Finance Co. holdup was arrested in Douglas at 7 15 am. W M Jarrell carried $822 and a revolver. After fleeing from roadblocks near Deming and Lordsburg the suspect was identified by papers and later jailed as El Paso officials were alerted. Some records showed recent time spent in Tucson.
Richard Taylor of Davis Monthan Field and five others posted 36 for the front nine to share the lead in the Inter-Service tournament for the Forrestal trophy. Teammates include T Sgt Harold Ridgeley Col James Wilson Capt Leo Roberts and Maj Lawson Magruder plus Sgt Jack Lawson.
A mongrel puppy wounded by a bullet and frightened into submission may recover with help from a Tucson housewife and a veterinarian. The incident led to a complaint signed by Justice of the Peace C. W. Gardner and Deputy Sheriff Bert Arce, with an arrest warrant expected Wednesday. The dog was attacked when a car drove up to a yard on 552 West Limber.
