Dusk falls at Memorial hospital as Babe Ruth, 53, lies dying on the ninth floor. Reporters stand watch while doctors relay grim bulletins of his sinking pulmonary condition. Outside, children plan flowers for a hoped recovery. Father Kaufman visits Ruth daily.
The baseball icon died at 8 01 p m of throat cancer at Memorial hospital. Fans and children gathered outside as the Sultan of Swat left a lasting legacy with 714 career home runs and a new generation of admirers. A funeral will follow with services at St Patrick's Cathedral and public viewing at Universal Funeral Chapel.
About 50 pupils at St. Mary's Industrial School in Baltimore heard a Mass for Babe Ruth after his death. Brother Charles, superintendent of the Xaverian school, recalled Ruth’s nine years there and anecdotes from fellow Brother Herbert about the Bambino’s left handed throw and early baseball days.
GRAND FORKS N D Aug 17 About 50 persons were reported injured several seriously when 10 cars of the Great Northern railways crack Oriental limited left the track near Rugby Monday night The crash disrupted the line and emergency crews rushed to the scene.
In the Russian zone of Germany shortages worsen as workers at the Krupp Magdeburg plant strike over scarce food. Western coal and steel cutoffs, retaliation for Berlin blockade, trigger plant closures and arrests. Planes bring shoes cigarets and food to western Berlin while border tensions rise near Salzwedel and border areas.
The House Un-American Activities Committee failed to uncover a perjured witness in the Alger Hiss case, with Thomas stating hearings resume Sept. 7. Senate rival Ferguson blasts loyalty programs as Bentley and Chambers testify, while a potential Kosenkina testimony looms. President Truman signs inflation control laws, but effective dates and rules remain pending with the Fed to set dates.
City council executive session discusses lifting the quota on liquor licenses after a state supreme court ruling that only the state could issue licenses. Three applications were on the agenda including a transfer from Blue Moon to Greyhound depot and two original requests at Western market and National market. The quota is reported full. City Atty. Thomas to comment.
Washington dispatch reports Truman backers struggle to place 11 pro Truman electors on the Alabama ballot. Senator Sparkman says only a state legislature session could lift the ticket. A Montgomery meeting plans to regroup August 28 in Birmingham to nominate electors.
PHOENIX Aug 17 The State wide School Board association pushes a constitutional change to elect a nine member lay board to run the state department of education removing the post of state superintendent from politics. L D Klemmedson incumbent predicts a special session action and possible ballot inclusion for November.
Harry Dexter White, 56, former assistant secretary of the treasury from 1945 to 1946 and a key figure in Washington spy hearings, died at his summer home in Fitzwilliam New Hampshire Monday, his family disclosed Tuesday in Boston.
New York August seventeenth. Soviet Consul General Yakov Lomakin said Russian teacher Oksana Kosenkina jumped from a third floor window amid a suicidal despair after a nervous breakdown. He accused anti Communists of kidnapping and drugging her and blamed American officials for provoking the breakdown. Kosenkina remains in critical condition at Roosevelt Hospital with fractures. The New York Times reported a police conclusion that kidnapping claims are unfounded and that the U S government will base its official response on that finding amid protests from Moscow and Washington.
In Chicago on Tuesday 24000 United Auto Workers members in seven International Harvester plants walked out after a brief union statement that the company had made an offer worth considering and then rejected further negotiations. The strike followed the offer rejection with a simple spokesman saying we are on strike.
Bulletin from Ogdensburg New York notes James V. Forrestal, U S secretary of defense, departed for Washington suddenly on Tuesday without delivering the scheduled talk at the ongoing bicentennial celebration. No caller or purpose was announced.

Acting Gov Dan E Garvey said he will issue a call next week to convene the Arizona legislature in a seventh special session between Sept 7 and 13. The session would address social security and a gubernatorial succession law amid federal pressure on extending benefits.
Senate leadership plans a dramatic rule change to end filibusters. Taft says the move could take weeks to secure a two thirds vote and would require defections from Democrats. The two loopholes in the cloture rule, dating from 1947, would be closed to allow decisive debate limits.
