Miss America Seeks to Expand Negro Participation
Atlantic City AP reports the Miss America Pageant asks the NAACP for help to include more Black contestants, defending its no discrimination policy while offering a $1000 scholarship for Negro organization sponsorship. About 70 000 girls enter 3 500 local pageants annually for a chance at the national finals in September. This year 40 to 50 were Black. Dorothy Screen and Tanya Dennis each came close to finals.
