577 War Criminals Still In Jap Prison
Tokyo report notes ten years after Japan's surrender 577 war criminals remain at Sugamo prison. At surrender in 1952 Sugamo housed 1,244 prisoners. China France and the Philippines have released most of theirs. The Tokyo Shimbun cites hopes of U S release around 100 on Sept 2, the anniversary of the surrender.

Former Librarian of Congress Dies
Dr Herbert Putnam 93 former Librarian of Congress died yesterday in Woods Hole Massachusetts from coronary thrombosis. He served as librarian from April 5 1899 to Oct 1 1939 and was survived by two daughters Brenda Putnam of Wilton Connecticut and Mrs Eliot O Hara of Washington. He was a native of New York and son of George Palmer Putnam founder of the publishing house.
