Florence Chadwick of San Diego swam from Cap Gris Nez to Dover in record time, beating the women’s mark and finishing with a pace of 60 then 26 strokes per minute. Shirley May France halted eight miles offshore, while Chadwick declined outside help and funded the feat at about $5,000.

Truman Plans Tax Message Budgeting for Excess Profits Levy

Close associates say President Truman intends to ask Congress for a multi billion dollar excess profits tax on corporations. The move faces party pressure to add an anti profiteering levy on the five billion dollar first installment general tax boost to fund arms against Communist aggression. Senate panel bars copper tariff restoration move

Florence Chadwick's English Channel swim hailed by mother

In San Diego, Florence Chadwick's mother praised her daughter's effort as she swam toward the English Channel record. The 31 year old swimmer, born November 9 1918, has a long wall of trophies and a career built on rough ocean water racing. Florence recently spent two years with American Arabia Oil Co. and received cheers from her hometown as word of the triumph spread.
