Council backs plan to raze barrio building

The City Council refused a halt to demolish the adobe structure near El Tira Dito Wishing Shrine on South Main Avenue. Foundation leaders led by Ar milio Trejo urged recognition of claimed historic value at W Main Ave and W Simpson Road, but Tucson Historical Committee President Mrs. Alene Smith argued the building lacks significance. Owner Mrs. Olga Trujillo de Nagore sought demolition for safety of Carrillo School pupils and said she would not sell. Trejo said funds might be raised from state and local groups, while Mayor Lewis C. Murphy indicated the council would proceed with the original plan unless objections arise.
