Snaketown Monument Proposal in Arizona History
Senator Carl Hayden introduces a bill to create a 2000 acre Snaketown National Historical Monument to protect Hohokam archaeological remains on the Gila River Indian Reservation near Guadalupe. The Hohokam likely preceded today’s Pima, inhabited Snaketown from early Christian era to 1150 A.D. An irrigation system was found by Dr. Emil Haury in 1930 and ruins were covered in 1956 for preservation.
