Pay scale rise for guards aims to bolster prison security
The State Personnel Commission and the Department of Corrections reached a plan to raise guard salaries and upgrade classifications from guards to assistant superintendent. Guards would move from 621 to 663 dollars monthly, sergeants 709 to 758, lieutenants 315 to 881, captains 881 to 905, and the assistant superintendent from 1126 to 1236. The superintendent and deputy remain unchanged. The move follows disturbances and the June slayings, with new guard positions also authorized. The committee approved a management study for the Personnel Commission, urged restructuring, and set a September session to discuss implementation.
