A basement fire at St Anthony's hospital in Effingham Illinois spread through a laundry chute trapping patients and staff. Officials estimated 57 deaths with 108 patients in the building and 55 survivors. Nine newborns perished and several nurses remained missing.
Early Tuesday Tucson voters at six polling places reported slow turnout with under 1000 votes cast for the mayor and three city council seats by 1 p.m. UA students crowded in lines as 1200 tags read I voted Have you. Rumors swirled that Republicans were backing a write-in effort to beat incumbents Houston Brady Niemann and Pistor.
Michigan splits between Republicans and Democrats in a statewide reading. The GOP carried the presidential vote and appeared to sweep the ticket while a Democratic governor was elected. Charles M. Ziegler led in the highway commission race by about 66 000 votes over John H. McCarthy. Wayne County showed a Democratic lean but GOP gains were strong across reported precincts.
Congress debates a Marshall plan extension and arms the allies as a Senate committee weighs anti espionage and missile range bills. The North Atlantic treaty faces ratification doubts with a possible special session. President Truman may seek a $2 billion arms program for Europe amid Kremlin opposition. The 12 nation pact signing occurred Monday with Sate Secretary Acheson signing for the United States.
The United Nations General Assembly opens Tuesday amid East‑West tensions over the North Atlantic pact. Russia protests the 20 year defense treaty, while Dr. Herbert Evatt will address the session to urge UN cooperation and peace. Delegates expect early attacks on the pact in the six week session.

The Lucky Lady II landed at Davis Monthan Air Force Base at 12 10 PM returning from weeks of servicing at Tinker Field Oklahoma City. The non stop globe girdling flight crew of 14 men not aboard on return. First Lt. Melvin Cooper led a crew to Oklahoma City to bring the plane home.
Tucson residents packed chambers urging Gov Garvey to call a special legislative session on civil rights. Mayor Houston and the council remained silent as speeches pressed for unsegregated schools and equal access in public spaces, led by Maj Dorsey J Watson.
South Tucson councilman Joe N. Corral told the Arizona corporation commission that taxi service was hard to obtain in July. The commission opened hearings on the taxi application and on private water company rate requests. Attorney William Dunipace said Eastside Water Co. customers were informed of a rate increase effective April 1, with no record of an order found yet. The hearing date is not set.
FBI reports Richard Henderson Crowe a 40 year old New York cashier who vanished with 884660 from a National City Bank branch was captured in Daytona Beach Florida. He surrendered quietly and agreed to return to New York for trial. Authorities recovered partial loot including 54798.63 from a suitcase and earlier sums 36505 and 39850 were accounted for. Crowe admitted taking securities to anger bank officials and tossed them into the Atlantic Ocean before his capture. Arraignment planned in Daytona Beach.
Washington April 5 Rep Clair Engle California objected to a central Arizona project hearing breaking up over quorum concerns. Chairman John Murdock recessed the session to allow Engle to respond to a Arizona witness supporting the 738 million dollar Gila river irrigation plan.
Cleon T. Knapp of Tucson presented a concise summary to the U S house irrigation and reclamation subcommittee in Washington on the Colorado River dispute. He drew praise from Rep. Bentsen and others for clarity and for leaving Rep. Poulson speechless, with Kenneth Atkin hailing it as the most able presentation yet before a congressional committee.
Arizona officials debate using 11170.66 from the land sale suspense fund to pay appraisal boards for grazing land reappraisals. Land Commissioner C C Williams will meet with State Auditor Ann Frohmiller to decide. Gov Garvey vetoed a land appraisal bill, while the attorney general Fred Wilson says no reversal of opinion occurred. Ling reiterates the appraisal board handles state land valuations. Williams delays lease renewals as the issue runs through the existing law.
Nash Motores cut prices on all standard models by 20 and on special models by 30. The four door 600 Airflyte sedan is $1,693 and the Ambassador Airflyte luxury sedan drops to $2,054 after a $120 reduction. Detroit reports follow Ford cuts and Kaiser Frazer's $198 to $333 drop.
Arnold Aderman a truck driver watched his wife flee the burning St Anthony’s hospital delivery room early Tuesday. She escaped unharmed and later gave birth to a son about an hour after leaving the building. Aderman recounts the escape in a subsequent dispatch.
