Peter Herlin was executed in Hackensack New Jersey for the murder of Barney Kanter a butcher. He fought deputies tearing down a lead pipe and threatened attackers before authorities finally used a water hose to subdue him and bring him to the gallows. He shot Kanter after being refused five cents worth of dog meat.
The Arctic steamer Fram reached Haugessund Norway with the Sverdrup expedition aboard. Captain Otto Sverdrup, who led the Fram during Nansen’s 1895 North Pole voyage, commanded the ship which sailed from Christiansund for Greenland exploration on June 24, 1898 to study ice conditions.

In Tacoma Washington a freight train crash on a steep grade near the Northern Pacific tunnel killed Fireman H S Shaffer and injured crew as wreckage burned and twelve cars were destroyed. In Chillicothe Ohio a Baltimore and Ohio passenger wreck killed two and injured forty four when the Royal Blue flyer struck an open switch at fifty miles per hour amid a crowded car full of passengers.
