A Kentucky judge was ambushed and shot, described as a victim of spite linked to political rivalries during his bid for office. The incident underscores a violent edge in local political clashes and threats against judicial figures.
Allen C. Hyden county judge of Owsley County Kentucky was shot three times at an early hour in an ambush. Bloodhounds have been secured to trail the unknown assailant as deputy sheriffs organize a large posse. The shooting follows a long bitter intra party contest over the judge’s nomination and election. Hyden was a popular four year incumbent and is not expected to survive.
Mrs. Johanna C. Samuels of Kentucky offers 303000 acres of coal lands to the Joint Citizens Committee to operate if the Pennsylvania strike ceases. She also proposes West Virginia coal lands to sell at cost, aiming to supply the poor with cheap fuel via business operators of integrity.
New York market notes show Mexican dollar at 40 cents and silver quoted at 50 percent, with copper at 11.75 and 11.95.
President Roosevelt proposed arbitration to end the strike and miners from Wilkesbarre to the anthracite fields begin electing delegates for a convention to consider the plan. The convention will hear objections but aims to settle the dispute, with companies and unions prepared to support workers without immediate jobs.

Henry Campbell a wealthy Latimore planter in Cleveland County died by shooting himself through the heart after expressing despair over family troubles. Earlier he survived a fall into a well but persisted in his intent, firing a pistol in the barn and leaving a final note beside his own portrait.
David Constantineau of Wakefield Canada, described as violently insane and six feet tall, was arrested after a struggle with Hull police. His father had earlier persuaded Mayor Pellissier to take him to jail in Hull. The Mayor disappeared, and authorities fear Constantineau dumped Pellissier into the Gatineau River.
Three Northwestern University co-eds climbed a five story dorm fire escape to seize a freshman banner planted by rival boys on the roof. About 200 students and Evanston residents watched as the banner changed hands and cheers erupted on the street. A second incident at Sheridan Cottage involved a stranded co-ed sliding down a rope after male classmates seized her ascent ladder.
A broken wheel caused a wreck on the Southern Pacific freight near Hanford. Three unknown tramps were killed and one or two persons were slightly injured.
At Gonatves the revolutionists surrender and the government forces prepare to occupy the town without disorder. The capitulation follows diplomatic intervention by foreign consuls.
In Broad Street, New York, William C. Turner shot and killed Albert Hamilton of Pittsburg and W. J. Mallard during a meeting with Center and McIntyre to settle a $5000 defalcation claim. Turner then killed himself, ending the confrontation. Turner formerly led the Climax Bottling Company, with the others as stakeholders.
Mrs. James I. Kellar of 131 North Western Ave Springfield Ohio drowns her three week old daughter in Snyder Fork lake and attempts to end her own life. Her husband rescues her and the infant remains found at the lake bottom. She cites mental distress and says she wanted to die. Her father killed himself eight years earlier.
Secretary Shaw telegraphs from Chicago instructing the treasury to purchase for the sinking fund on Friday and Saturday any 4 1/2 percent bonds of the 1925 loan and pay 187 1/2 percent plus interest to the purchase date.
El tiptoe or Eltielpo, a leading clerical daily, condemns the Hague tribunal decision. It says Mexico must hand California bishops money by pen stroke, funds critics say will be used not for Indian relief but for other aims.
In Longford Kansas last night a group smashed a number of items. They wrecked beer cases and ten kegs of whisky, tarred the building housing Riseman's saloon, and feathered a woman inmate. Two men conducted the disruption and twenty cases were damaged.
William L. Cannon, an attorney, pressed a putative heir claim to the late Charles L. Fair in San Francisco. Details were kept secret and estate officials declined to pursue the claim calling it another attempt to fleece the estate.
In Pittsburg on October 17 the fifteenth annual convention of the National Live Stock Association began with three hundred delegates in attendance. Delegates hailed from livestock exchanges in fourteen cities.
Chicago reports a custody dispute over Bessie Comfort the nineteen year old girl once sold as a baby for two dollars and a canary. The three claimants included Mrs. Louis Hummel and Mrs. Christine Girard. Judge Chytraus will decide custody after hearing all stories.
Winfield Scott, retired Army chaplain, is named to the position vacated by Gol Herring. The appointment fills a key religious support role for the service branch and restores leadership continuity.
Governor Brodie formally appoints Captain Winfield Scott to the University of Arizona board of regents. Scott, a Baptist minister and former U S Army chaplain, will likely be elected chancellor and reside in Tucson. He previously represented Maricopa County as a Republican legislator and is well regarded by colleagues. The Citizen had reported the move two weeks early.
The Borquez trial enters its second day with little new testimony and a lengthy jury selection. A panel of twenty nine jurors was finally chosen after a morning to afternoon session, with extensive questioning by both sides and several unqualified opinions.
