General Pershing reports strong enemy counter attacks on both sides of the Meuse repulsed. Americans execute a successful operation. British advance south of Le Eau and French actions at Chamene gain.
Northeastern Minnesota faced a sweeping disaster as forest fires on Saturday and Sunday left hundreds dead and thousands homeless. Reports indicate the toll could reach as high as 1660, with dozens of towns destroyed including Mooselake and Cloquet. Relief under Adjutant General W. F. Sheinow and Governor Burnquist is underway.
Across a wide front in Flanders Allied troops led by French Haig and Petain drive German forces back with a dawn assault. Laon falls to French and British units crowning the Cambria Quentin and Champagne offensives. Sixty five hundred civilians liberated as French advance beyond Laon, with German retreat hampered by railroad bombardment.
London and Washington dispatches report no early armistice. Germany's note to President Wilson is considered a peace plea aimed at split with the allies, while British and American officials insist on unconditional surrender and full guarantees before any settlement. Washington reports fourth Liberty Loan drive aims for about 600 million dollars in the next six days.
London reports an official German Army statement saying German forces withdrew north of Laon to new positions along the Aisne river.
AP dispatches report a training accident at Camp Mills on Long Island where a machine gun on a plane fired and wounded three Sanitary Corps men, one fatally. Portugal declares siege as President takes command. Aviation instructor Lieutenant Re. Graham dies in a spin at Fort Worth. Wolff News Agency denies William II abdication rumors. Baden chancellor Mani Milan resignation reported in Holland. Secretary Baker says war department pushes forward quickly.
The 11th federal district executive committee calls a Liberty loan sales drive for next Wednesday to enlist all residents and close business houses for a countrywide subscription. Mayor Parker to return at 4 30 to review the plan and issue a proclamation. Automobiles to be requisitioned and all business suspended until victory is won.
