New murder trial sought in Steelman case by Arizona defense
The Arizona Supreme Court heard arguments to grant Willie Luther Steelman a new trial claiming Miranda rights violations and denial of access to counsel before and during his 1975 trial. Public Defender Robert Norgren cited ongoing questioning while Steelman withdrew from heroin, questions about his sanity, and the exclusion of California psychiatrist Dr. Patricia White as defense evidence. Assistant Attorney General Thomas Bakker argued the prosecution is entitled to rebuttal witnesses and that prior rulings supported the state. Steelman faces a death sentence for the Sandberg murders with automatic appeal. a California murder conviction could extend life terms.
