The business meeting of the Grand Army of the Republic begins today at the federal capital. A grim report from the eastern theater describes squalor grime and death tied to ongoing strike turmoil and the related peril.
In Washington on October 9 the G A R encampment began at First Congregational church with about 1000 delegates. Commander-in-Chief Torrance presided as officers submitted reports and delivered the annual address. A committee report on H Clay Evans criticized his pension office administration and noted Roosevelt accepted his resignation on March 22.
Seventeen mines idle since the strike will restart tomorrow morning with 4,000 miners returning to work in Montgomery. United Mine Workers sub district No 1 division No 17 accepted a nine hour day and biweekly pay, and the right to organize, though recognition of the union is not stated. No other mines are affected by the action.
Cresceus driven by George H. Ketcham failed to lower the world record on a poor Oakley track in Cincinnati. The champion trotter clocked 2.08 for a mile, the fastest on the Oakley course, after an exhibition with Dan Patch. Ketcham blamed the track but praised Cresceus’s condition.
Peoria, Illinois. Frank B. Townsend, a clerk for the Iowa Central railway, used a bathroom gas heater and inhaled a poisonous gas when he disconnected a safety pipe. His wife attempted to help and both were overcome. she drowned in the tub. Townsend survived with hopeful medical reports.
Geneva dispatch reports the workmen's national committee ordering a sympathetic strike across Switzerland in support of street car workers. Newspapers suspended. troops ordered out as the unrest spreads through major cities.
Agua His, a Yuma Indian, sues J. S. Spear the Fort Yuma agent in San Diego county seeking 2500 dollars plus costs. He alleges Spear imprisoned him July 21 to August 30 1902 in the Yuma Reservation jail and cut off all his head hair as an indignity. He also incurred 10 dollars for habeas corpus and 40 dollars for legal fees.
In Bangor Maine on Oct 9 Mrs Eliza Littlefield of Penobscot is dead or dying after a mysterious assault. She lived alone with two sons aged 13 and 9 on a farm. husband and two elder sons were away at sea. A son found her unconscious with throat wounds and a bruised head. doctors said she would die without speaking.
President Mitchell of the United Mine Workers declines to end the strike despite Roosevelt’s urging. He argues miners offered arbitration, but coal operators would not accept impartial findings, and the onus should fall on those who refused such review.
Alarming reports from Baltimore about Senator Vest's eye condition are downplayed. The long time eye problems and periodic consultations with an oculist are normal for him. He traveled to Baltimore without his wife, a sign not indicating extreme danger, and a note from Vest says he is doing well and treatment is satisfactory.
Former Senator Chandler of New Hampshire and president of the Spanish Treaty Claims Commission says Congress can acquire and operate coal fields. He argues the government could take possession for a year or hold indefinitely, since coal is a public necessity despite private ownership.

National Live Stock association and western railways, aided by government legal staff, move to oppose a pending merger of the nation’s large packing firms. President John S. Springer says the fight is progressing with support from President C. F. Morse and Roosevelt administration.
In Punxsutawney an autopsy followed the death of Agnes Tompkins 15 after drinking from a bottle with two boarders L M Miller and Al Weber. Her companion Merlotte Hogenlogler was left gravely ill though later revived. Authorities held Miller in custody while witnesses and a coroner's jury prepared.
Boston today saw a bill in equity filed in the State Supreme Court by five men against coal companies and coal carrying roads linked to the strike. Attor ney Heman W. Chaplin urged a receiver be appointed though public skepticism doubts quick relief from the coal famine amid a likely lengthy court fight.
Des Moines Iowa October 9 1908 report describes twin girls born three weeks earlier weighing three and a half and three pounds placed in a kitchen oven converted into an incubator. Under grandmother care and constant heat the babies survived and are in good health.
