Allied troops advance on the Verdun front despite German counterattacks on the right and center. American units push forward southwest of the Verdun area while storm troops counter and German activity increases behind enemy lines.

In Washington on October 7 discussion of Germanys peace offer opened in the Senate. Senator Poindexter warned that a truce would end military action and, with Belgium and France evacuated, amount to a German victory. Senator Hitchcock argued the plan demands France return of Alsace Lorraine and Belgium and France reparations among terms.
London dispatches report distrust of German peace terms amid Wilson framework. Politicians debate unconditional surrender, Belgium indemnity, and Alsace Lorraine return as public editors call for full defeat of Germany before any armistice. Hindenburg resigns as field marshal after claimed strategic retreat.
General Pershing reported small gains for American forces between the Meuse and Des Anges with heavy infantry and artillery actions. Serbian forces push the Austro German troops north of Vranje toward Nish and report 1500 prisoners and 12 guns captured in the operation.
Bulgaria demands that all allied powers quit Bulgarian territory within a month. The Sofia dispatch to the Berlin Tageblatt reports the ultimatum issued in Sofia on Saturday.
Reported in London on October 7 that American troops wounded are arriving in large numbers at a southern English port each day. The dispatch says they are flushed with victory and asserts German defenders admit the end is near.
Across Paris and Washington official notes announced no response would be given tonight to Germanys peace proposal. Reports from Bern and Warsaw noted police shootings and protests, while a submarine incident in the O 53 killed one and injured others.
Paris reports the Central Powers seeking an armistice and peace parleys. The French press views the move as an attempt by Germany to exploit Brest Litovsk and Bucharest treaties and to save the Hohenzollern dynasty.
Washington reports Germany and Austria Hungrys note to President Wilson seeks an armistice on conditions set by Wilson. Frederick Ciederlin and Monster Ekeneron delivered the texts. Secretary Lansing received the Austrian copy. Officials expect a prompt U S reply to avoid misleading the public about the war effort.
Emperor William declares a renewed peace offer to the enemy as Macedonian front crumbles. He praises German troops for defending the fatherland and vows to maintain strength until terms of a honorable peace are possible. The message, signed in Basel, cautions against lowering arms and urges unity with allies.
The note forwarded by Chancellor Maximilian to President Wilson via the Swiss government asks the United States to take charge of restoring peace and to inform all belligerent powers. The text continues on Page 2, Column 3.
French forces crossed the Suippe River east of Orainville and reached outskirts of Bhazancourt and Bou-sur-Suippe after heavy fighting. Reims and Laon were reported cleared or ablaze as Germans retreated. St. Masmes fell to French troops with further advances toward the Arnes river and Rheims region.
