In New York, subordinates of the president face hold up extortion claims tied to a game of bribery inside an arbitration body. Officials accused of pressuring payments amid a broader political dispute.
A large crowd gathers in Scranton for the fourth day of the anthracite commission hearings. Mitchell, on the stand since Friday, resumes as McVeagh cross examines. Progress is slow and likely to span weeks. attorneys expect a plan to shorten the inquiry. Mitchell is seen as the key witness and miners resist rushing while he testifies.
Harry C Wilson chief clerk in the department of the east U S A and Dr Benjamin F Whitmore of New York are jailed on extortion and attempted blackmail charges. The Water Front Improvement Company linked to Rikers Island reclamation faced bribe allegations amid staged meetings with detectives and officers from Jersey City and New York. Martin delivered $4500 in cash as Whitmore and Wilson received 2250 each before arrest. The trio faces Tombs court arraignment.
In Rochester on November 18 a healthy baby girl was born on a wet sidewalk during a downpour. The complaint notes Polly the bird curses at will and even mimics alarm clock phrases, prompting the estranged wife to seek separation after nearly 20 years of marriage. Their 17 year old daughter also objects to the pet’s imprecations.
The final day of President Roosevelt’s Mississippi bear hunt opened with an early start and improved weather. Despite earlier bad luck, hunters pressed for a shot at a bear while the President remained upbeat, hoping to return for another hunt with Hank Collier as the party prepared to break up this afternoon.
Denver reports an Indian known as the Red Christ, a Nez Perce figure, alleged to foment Ute discontent and unrest. Deputy Game Warden H G Wheeler cites his influence across tribes and warns the federal government to arrest and isolate the propagator to curb violence.

New Orleans May 19 The committee on resolutions of the American Federation of Labor reported favorably on a Cooper Union introduced resolution urging the convention to protest the senate bill to stop issuing revenue stamps on all malt or brewed liquors of one eighth. The report was adopted. A resolution pledging the Federation to defeat anti scalping bills for ticket brokers was adopted.
News from NOV. 19 reports rapid cholera spread in Gaza and Lydda with authorities tightening control. Jaffa records 57 deaths in three days as villages along the pean frontier suffer, and overall aid is urged for all districts.
