Allied troops capture Valenciennes after bitter fighting lasting over 24 hours in the area south of the city. British and American units hold positions east of the Scheldt and near the Antwerp-Namur-Metz line as Foch’s forces press the German front. Italian and Austrian fronts show continual advances from Lake Garda toward the Piave with Brenta heights seized as troops threaten Austrians retreat toward Trentino.

An official Rome dispatch notes the drastic terms Diaz submitted to Austria and warns that the Italian victory is growing rapidly in scope. The message, dated today, hints at severe conditions implying substantial Allied leverage as the war progresses.
London reports Bavarian premier notified Berlin that the Bavarian royal family would claim the throne if Emperor William abdicates. Ludwig III, born 1845, became king 1913 after Otto’s incapacity. Crown Prince Rupprecht commanded western front troops, later absent from his forces on leave.
King Boris of Bulgaria abdicates after a brief reign begun October 3. Peasant government under M. Shambulinsky, longtime peasants and Agrarians leader, assumes control. Shambulinsky, released from prison, led the new government after pardoning King Ferdinand’s abdication.
