Angeles May 1 The General Federation of Women's Clubs opens its sixth biennial convention in Simpson Auditorium drawing about three thousand delegates from across the country. President Rebecca Lowe of Atlanta presides as welcomes are delivered by Gov Henry Gage and others. The gathering features elaborate social events and early business sessions with reports on credentials and secretaries, promising lively proceedings.
Enver Col May 1 Rev Charles S Olmstead consecrated bishop of the Episcopal diocese of Colorado succeeding the late Bishop Spalding. The ceremony at St John’s, led by Bishop Tuttle, drew participating bishops from Kansas, South Dakota, Michigan City, Laramie, Utah, Tennessee, and Arkansas amid elaborate pageantry. Meanwhile Crown Point reports Colonel Brodie plans few changes among Murphy era officeholders.
The senate foreign affairs committee moved to amend the sundry civil bill to fund U S representation in Cuba. The proposal allocates 12 000 dollars for the minister and 3 500 dollars each for Matanzas Cienfuegos and Santiago consulates plus 5 000 dollars for the Havana consul general.
Washington May 1 The President via Secretary Root orders a court martial for Major Edwin F Glenn of the Fifth Infantry. He is cited as a participant in the water cure during testimony before the Senate Philippine committee.
In the Cherokee Nation at Vinita Oklahoma Territory May 1 the Dawes commission strips hundreds of intermarried whites of citizenship for marrying white wives after their Cherokee spouses died or were divorced The interior department affirms the commission s rejection of more than 300 such claims final order Each citizen would receive 100 acres of land and a per capita share of tribal funds and sale proceeds but over 1 000 claimants will be denied admission with losses totaling more than 1 000 000
Meade Kansas May incidents reveal Homer Lanham a ranchman creating trouble in Meade. He fired four shots at the town marshal and wounded a man Kragh who may die. The marshal seized his gun and saved Lanham with a pocketed book. A second prisoner Jesse Lanham arrived with a revolver and defied the authorities. A public meeting led H W Griggs to demand surrender. Lanham fired wounding Mrs Campbell before being disarmed.
Large scale labor actions push wages hours and conditions. In Buffalo over two thousand carpenters, iron workers, and plumbers strike for higher pay and shorter hours. Pittsburg sees 12 to 15 thousand on strike. Toronto reports 10 thousand workers walking off, with newspapers ready to strike May 8 if demands aren’t met. Also, rumors circulate of a possible compromise in the Northern Securities merger case as federal actions loom.
In Burgin Kentucky a enslaved woman known as Aunt Susan has not spoken to anyone for over forty years since her husband was sold away shortly after their marriage. At about sixty she remains silent though her mind engages in constant whispered talk with herself. Local color notes say she is regarded as bewitched and avoids others.

F Pochel of Newkirk Oklahoma visited New York and met a stranger claiming kin to a local banker. They lured him to Fort Lee and a staged game led to two drafts for 200 dollars each and a 1000 dollar check. Pochel was arrested with the two con men and later returned home.
