Clarence Ryan of New Orleans and Andrew Houser of Western Union face charges for defrauding United Fruit’s Fruit Dispatch unit of over 21 000 by approving bogus telegraph bills. Ryan issued due bills and shared profits with Houser as they skimmed funds, with total theft potentially ranging from eight to fifteen thousand dollars.
A requiem Mass for John W. Mackay was attended by family friends at St Mary's Cadogan Square. Attendees included Princess Colonna, her son and daughter, and two sons of the Countess Telfoner. Mackay’s body was later moved to Nottingham convent and will depart for America in September.

Incendiaries try to destroy Fort Stevens near Astoria Oregon. They set fire to the torpedo storehouse and the barracks but both fires were extinguished. A note signed The Twelve Dynamiters claimed their plan to destroy the forts and warned the campaign would continue. Soldiers report fear and further attempts recently on another fort building.
Silas Bennett, of Baltimore county, was attacked by a large eagle in a field near Gardenville this morning. After a ten minute ferocious clash he retreated into a building and later returned with a rifle, but the bird had flown.
Irving Judge of Toledo files for divorce from Pear Thorn alleging he married her on May 18 1901 to save his mother who faced mental strain from his arrest and paternity claim. He was twenty at the time and says he never lived with her, preferring his mother’s home. Both parties are well to do.

The husband abandoned the child. Mrs Thomas Wooley cared for her. Upon recovery the mother was denied access and the judge awarded guardianship to the foster parents. The child testified she did not know her mother.

Newport July 29 The Goulds youngest child travels with three attendants to New Cliffs Hotel in palatial quarters. Great effort was made to keep the child’s presence secret as Mrs Gould fears kidnapping. Mr and Mrs Gould are expected aboard their yacht in a few days.
A premature explosion in a transit tunnel under Park Avenue at Forty first Street injures four men. Two are in serious condition and may die, with the incident described as an unlucky section where several accidents have occurred.
