Edward W. Bassett recalls the 1965 city blackout from his Bronx vantage point on Nov 9. He describes the darkness across the city, the flickering Daitch Shopwell sign, and residents coping without power. The next day papers detail stranded commuters, looting rumors, and acts of calm amid the outage.
A massive electrical outage hit New York causing 150000 customers in Jamaica Queens to regain power by morning, with 17000 homes in Westchester relit within the hour. LI Rail Road and Conrail halted service for 370000 commuters as tunnels and airports faced shutdowns and crowded venues went dark.
Reports from New York describe extensive looting across Harlem during the blackout. On 125th Street between Park and Lexington, storefronts were shattered and goods absconded while police arrested hundreds in blackout related offenses. Firefighters battled a blaze in an accountant’s office as crowds dispersed.
